WHAT IS IT?

Acupuncture is a form of classical Chinese medicine.  It is growing very popular in this country as an alternative medicine and a complement to Western medicine. Western treatment focuses on relieving pain and/or repairing a health issue. Often this is done through the use of anti-inflammatory drugs or other medications, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery.  Acupuncture offers a safe, natural alternative, with virtually no side effects, and even prevent illness.

An important part of acupuncture is the concept of Qi (pronounced "chee"). Qi is the vital energy that flows throughout the body and protects it from illness. It flows through pathways called meridians and provides nourishment to all of the body's organs. When Qi is blocked and causes a lack of flow or balance, symptoms of pain or disease may result. Acupuncture works to restore the balance and energy flow. As the body's energy flow returns to its natural balance, the body can naturally heal itself.

During an acupuncture treatment, very fine, sterile, and disposable needles are inserted at specific points along the meridian pathways. In general, when needles are inserted, you can expect to feel a light tingling sensation, a feeling of heaviness, warmth, or a sensation of local numbness. Most patients are surprised to discover that treatment involves little or not pain and is usually quite relaxing.

During your initial consultation, Bradley will conduct a thorough interview of your medical history and current health habits. He may examine your tongue, eyes, the color and texture of your skin, and feel your pulses. Based upon the findings during the interview and examination, Bradley will devise an individualized treatment that may include additional modalities such as cupping, moxabustion, Tui-na (Chinese massage), or the use of herbal liniments.

After your first visit, Bradley will recommend a treatment plan and may ask you to return once or twice per week for six to ten treatments depending on your needs and the severity of your issue. Once stabilized, you may be asked to return every three or four weeks for treatment. Once a person is in good health, it is recommended that you return for health maintenance and preventive care as needed. It is important to remember that acupuncture is not a "quick fix". Changes may occur quickly or over a longer period of time depending upon your overall nature and health.
